The key here - when you explain something to someone - you are required to have a better understanding. If you able to explain something to a kid, less educated person, you are required to simplify your explanation - come to a very basics, decompose the solution to digestable pieces. Such an ability requires big skill, but helps to understand more, and encourages to dig deeper, to find the simplicity amongst complexity.
