Feeling home

When i work with closed-source creation software i feel like i’m guest. If you’re a guest and something goes wrong, you either accept the fact or leave.

There are some good software with strong plugin system, which allows you to tweak software flow at some extent. Sometimes this helps to escape foreign feeling. Most of the times - plugin system is so weak and restrictive, or maybe even specifically limited to some domain, e.g. theme changing. So it doesn’t help to escape guest feeling.

Creation software, where i feel guest:

  • Windows
  • Unity
  • Any Adobe product (though they are mostly cool)

Creation software, where i feel home:

  • Linux (though i also feel much pain of amount of things i need to setup myself)
  • Godot
  • Blender
  • Aseprite
  • Nvim
  • …and more!

When i feel home using a system - my productivity is the highest. I know that whatever happens wrong, i can change it. I know that if anything not of my taste happens, i can change it. Home-feeling software allows you to build YOUR shape of content, not the shape framed by the closed-source software. But this often envolves doing additional work, work that may require experience and understanding.
