Dota 2 Improvements

I played Dota 2 around 1000 hours since the beta, and played a lot of League of Legends, and during this time i accumulated some personal thoughts of how the Defense of the Ancients legendary game could be improved.

First of all, as i saw from the modern Dota, the games are too lengthy. It’s hard to capture enemy’s highground, even if you dominate, unless a full team is committing. Every mistake in the lead ends up as big gains for the opponent to close the gap - for example a lot of gold is given if dominating hero is killed. This makes finishing games very hard.

Big objective on the map - Roshan - is not very efficient at low elo. It most often doesn’t give you enough traction to finish the game - in opposite to Baron Nashor, which gives all-team stat buffs, and, more importantly, buff for the minions to push highground. With Roshan’s Aegis low-skilled player most certainly will lose it somewhere by going in too-deep push.

A lot of farming options makes the game more of a farming than of a team fights or pressure. Often, the dominating team could gather together, take Roshan, and finish the game, but only together. Without full team playing it’s nearly impossible, as often 1-2 players are always farming the opposite side of the map.

The action which can barely lead to a victory of one team may only begin when majority of carry players are full or mostly equipped, which is with current meta and average low-skill of line farming is about 40 minute at best, and 50 minute at worst, as i saw from my low-elo games.

All of this makes a lengthy games 40+ minutes a usual thing in Dota, while in League, i noticed an average game to be 30 minutes, and dominating games around 20 minutes length. My personal opinion is that Dota should move towards lowering average session time by doing these things:

  1. Reduce amount of farming spots
  2. Allow for faster equipment obtaining
  3. Improve Roshan’s buffs, either make a more simple in power item, or look towards Riot Games’ decision of passive buffs with Nashor and the Dragons
  4. Make less gold for kills of dominating heroes, allow to make comeback by a more balanced and composure actions, rather than random kills

Another thing that is, by my opinion, a drawback of Dota 2 is unecessary complex mechanics, such as:

  • Secret shop
  • Couriers
  • Creep deny, but maybe this is good as it is
  • Recent features with river currents - why making the game even more complex?
  • Extra artifact slot
  • Tooo many active items, i remember playing as Dazzle, having 4 active skills, and 6 active items, plus need to manage some artifact slot - this could be a disaster for a new player

In most other cases, Dota is beautiful game, and much-much deeper than League of Legends, with all respect. But all legacy or wrong decisions made Dota unbereable for me to play in it’s current state.

It’s still interesting to watch the pro scene, but, for the time being, i will avoid the regular games. I will follow Dota development, maybe some of these things will eventually come to life.
